Barcelona 2011 Panel by kaytii Barcelona 2011 Panel by kaytii
This was our competition entry into Barcelona 2011 - Tower in Gothic Quarter, an international architecture competition, which we managed to freaking win!

Prizes include $3500USD and a ticket to Barcelona in June with accommodation to accept our award.

This started out as a university design project, and our coordinator thought it'd be a good way of showing us the ropes when it came to competitions. We had a month to do it and then the top four were submitted into the real competition with registration fees paid for. I worked on this with my friend.

Design requirements called for a 100m tall contemporary bohemian backpacker's hostel in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter, to accommodate 100 backpackers, and demonstrate zero-ecological impact. It also had very strict area requirements that we had to show compliance with.

How does it work structurally??

Thank you! :aww:

Good question! We were recently nominated for a structural innovation prize (winner is yet to be announced) and we had to prepare a structural report, so it's all fresh in my mind =P Basically, there are two cores, diagonally offset from each other (which is why you don't see one of them in the sectional render; looks sneaky, but is accurate). The structure is stabilised with tie-back cables, and supported laterally with rigid bridges that link the two cores.

Thank you so much ! I'm not too sure about where to find news on these competitions, we were given this one by our university coordinators. Archdaily promotes competitions sometimes, and then there are the annual ones like Evolo skyscraper, (which is ending soon I think?) that gets heavily promoted. It's kind of tough finding the time though isn't it? I know I never would've entered if we weren't made to for our course xD

By "details", do you mean of this project? Or competitions in general? ^^

Well laid out board too! Great use of the ground section to frame the more informative parts of the concept. Beautiful renders too :D

Yeah I'd love to enter more but it's hard to dedicate time to it when you don't know whether or not it'll be worth it.

I can imagine it's like that, yeah. It's a shame really, but I'm sure you have many competitions to win ahead of you :)

that's great to hear! Do they have a due date as to construction? I too studied architecture design and art history in college. but That was before your time and home PC's weren't on the market yet

Thank you :aww:! I'm pretty sure it's just an ideas competition (and I think the idea of a 100m backpackers hostel in the gothic quarter of Barcelona would not sit well with locals =P) so I don't think we'll need to worry about the next stage x)

Ah, sounds like you're no longer in this line of work then?

I gave up art to have babies and raise them well. It's hard to concentrat when little hands reachup and toddle off with your scale ruler or t square. As for new idea in old area's: I was there when they took down a square of business and homes from Boston's original history to put up the goverment center. So you never know what the future awaits and anything that is enviromentally sound is a plus
